There are two essential, crucial things to take from the article “The Gambler Who Beat Roulette“, and I beg that you will remember both:

1. You are meant to lose at casinos; you are not meant to win; if you win consistently, they will make you pay;

2. Nothing, but nothing, *has* a probability.

The story is about Croatian Niko Tosa, who roamed the world, from casino to casino, beating roulette wheels. He is ever hounded, threatened, and was even arrested once for the non-crime of winning too often. The charge the London police used to drag him to the hoosegow was “deception”. If they’re going to arrest people for “deception”, the UK will soon not have one free politician or reporter.

The police had to let him go, wonder of wonders, because they could find no evidence of “deception”, nor could they, nor anybody else, find on Tosa any kind of “device”.

“Devices” used to aid memory or to figure odds are illegal in some venues, but not in others. It scarcely matters whether you use a “device” or not, however, because you will be *made* unwelcome if you win consistently, regardless of *how* you win.

I sometimes wonder if people remember who runs casinos.

It’s not that casinos don’t want *no* wins. If nobody ever won, then casinos would fast empty out. It’s that they don’t want any individual to regularly best them.

Thus endeth point one. Now to point two.

Let me begin by asking this simple question: what is the probability, on a spin of an American roulette wheel (which has the numbers 0, “00”, and 1-36) of the ball landing on 30?

Please think before answering or reading further.

Right. There is no such probability. It has no probability because *nothing has a probability*.

Here is a second question, which is superficially similar to the first: Given a roulette wheel with the slots 0, “00”, 1-36, and a ball when the wheel is spun must land in one of these, what is the probability of the ball landing on 30?

This time we do have a probability, and it’s 1/38, just as you might have guessed.

What’s the difference between these two questions, which at first glance appear the same? This: in the first, we do not condition on any information; we ask about some mysterious quality or essence the wheel possesses, almost as if probability is contained somewhere in the wheel. This being impossible—probability is not a physical thing; it has no existence—we cannot calculate a probability.

We can in the second question, because now we have explicit premises which tell about the uncertainty we are to consider—the number of slots, the ball must fall. The first question allowed *any* set of premises you could bring to mind—an infinite set—while the second limited that set to one specific definite premise. We can’t calculate probabilities given this infinite set. We need one definite premise.

“I get it, I think. But Briggs, we still need to add the wheel is ‘fair’ in the second question.”

No, we don’t. To say the wheel is “fair” is redundant: it is to declare there is an exact symmetry, and to insist, even in the absence of other premises, that the probability is 1/38. It is argue like this: the probability of 30 is 1/38, given the probability of 30 is 1/38 (which is what “fair” means).

When you show up to the casino, both you and the casino will be using the second argument, with the fixed premises.

Tosa was using neither the first nor the second set of premises: he was using a third set, which he discovered for himself. But which he could not quite articulate, if forced.

He made late bets, which casinos encourage to increase the number of bets on each spin, and he can, for certain wheels, intuit the general location the ball will land. This, as they say, put the “odds in his favor”.

Casinos do their best to make the ball drop “chaotic”, which means “sensitive to initial conditions.” That has a technical meaning, but for us it means “almost impossible to predict.” The article shows the great lengths casinos take to, they hope, make the spins chaotic. They are now up to laser balancing.

That doesn’t mean any wheel is, or could be made in Reality chaotic. And, if Tosa is really performing as the article said, he can intuit the forces in play on real wheels, to enough degree to make money. This is why he not loved by gambling houses

If you were a super-physicist, and could figure all those forces yourself, then you, too, have a new set of premises which makes the spins certain, or near certain, to you. Like some physicists have done with coin flips.

There is nothing random in the physical world. The term “random” is just used to express that the forces leading to a physical result are so complicated that they cannot be determined.

Thus, a coin toss, the shape of a cloud, the number of neutrinos in a space at a specific time, a roulette ball and table or a random sample are not random. Just do a non random search in the search function above to find out why.

I feel like your two questions are basically just a “gotcha” because of how language works. When you say “a spin of the wheel”, and given that the subject is roulette, the average reader fills in the blanks that what you really meant was “a spin of the wheel in which a ball is dropped during a game of roulette”. So going back and saying “but I never said the ball was dropped” is the kind of argument I’d expect from a precocious 15 year old who nobody likes to talk to. Then you follow it up with “but we can assume that the slots are the same size” which is exactly what we all did during the first question. So that’s annoying.

Heresolong–I get what you’re saying, but I think the point is that in science it’s necessary to be very complete, specific, and accurate when describing what’s happening or what you’re doing, to avoid ambiguity, confusion, or misunderstandings. Not to assume anything, even if it all seems familiar.

But Briggs, why not mention “fairness” in the list of premises? After all, I can imagine a crooked wheel that doesn’t have a uniform distribution. Yes it’s true that in this way I put the answer into the question, but why is that a problem? Isn’t an answer always embedded in the question, when you enumerate all the premises? If you don’t enumerate all the premises then the answerer can and will inject some premises of their own. But if you do enumerate all the premises, then the answer will be mechanically certain – which is actually the point of all this. To mechanically derive answers from the questions. If it isn’t mechanical, then it’s according to free will and there’s no law to free will – because that’s a contradiction of terms. Either it makes it’s own laws, self determines and therefore can’t be predicted from “outside” (free will) or it doesn’t (mechanical reasoning).

“Nothing has a probability.” Then, what is it? What is the probability of nothing?

ball lands on number 7, how many spaces is the ball going to travel from 7 to the next number, if the ball moves 5 spaces from the number it was just on then its going to land on 22, 22 to 0 is 11 spaces from eachother, start messuring the amount of spaces the ball is moving, then play the trend. if the ball is falling short meaning falling 1-3 numbers from the number it was just on you will see a short trend start to occur, when it falls 7 to 11 11 to 9 9 under to 28 then it goes big spins, 13-15 numbers from the number it was on, now you can predict what areas and what numbers to place bets, i recommend tracking certain number counts like 5 6 7 8 9 10 spaces, and track how many times the ball has spun after it hits one of those counts, when the spins get up to 10 or 12 spins since its been 5 spaces from a number and its been shooting across the wheel LONG i will start loading up my bets on 12345 from the number it just landed, so if it lands on 7 or 12 after doing 5-7 long spins of 13 spaces im going to bet short on the same side of the wheel, 12 to 00= 5 spaces 7 to 28 5 spaces, so i would bet the 5th 6th spaces heavy and use 1$ protection bets for 789 spaces, incase im 1 number off and miss by 1 if i kno repeaters are coming, i bet 123 each side left and right, the hardest part about this method is determineing what side of the wheel to bet, or you can do wat i use to do play both sides 5 spaces apart from the number, so the left number and the right number but placeing 5$ on 1 number 2$ on the other number and maybe the 2 numbers surrounding it, like tessa its hard to put into words of patterns you see, but just becuase you cant messaure all the variables inbetween does not make something random, i have played rouleete and seen many spins, i have moved onto vitural bcuz of the algos much easier to predict
